Natural Ear Music Coaches
Natural Ear Music was founded in 1991 by Mike (Michele) Murphy, longtime Austin resident and musician. We employ only lifelong musicians who have proven that they have learned (often the hard way) what it takes to succeed musically.
Each teacher brings along a unique background, creative vision, and approach to making kids the best they can be. This team of teachers has developed the concept of teaching 'by ear' by competition, collaboration and persistence. It's a noisy process.

Originally from Paris where he started the bands Teenkats and Casanova, Thierry came to Austin in 1984, and in a short time became known in the Texas music scene, starting the group Will and the Kill with legendary bassist Alex Napier and a young Will Sexton.
He has played with such accomplished musicians as Johnny Carrol, Gene Summers, The Leroi Brothers, Alejandro Escovedo, Charlie Sexton, and Calvin Russel. In 2002, he released the live album the Tex-French Connection. MORE >>

MICAH ATER
:: RESIDENTIAL CAMP DIRECTOR
Micah started Natural Ear Music school with his mom in 1991, when he was 13 years old. He was already playing gigs, playing bass, which is still his primary instrument.
Micah is a graduating senior in civil engineering (December, 2007!) from the University of Texas at Arlington. He has been the director of the residential camp for the last six years as well as coaching the bands.
A studio musician, percussionist and producer with 30 years' experience, Paul Pearcy has played with some of the best in Texas. Voted "Best Drummer" two years in a row by The Austin Chronicle, Paul's recent studio credits include The Dixie Chicks' Grammy-winning album "Home." Paul can currently be seen playing with The Terri Hendrix Band. MORE >>
[from the Austin Chronicle]: As one of the blond blues boys, Andrews holds his turf not only as a veteran guitarist but as a vocalist as well. On Time to Burn, Andrews is bursting with soul, singing and writing as if he's been doing it all his life, which is more or less the truth. The material on Time to Burn weaves fave oldies and local color into Andrews' own material, less blues-based than soul-based. That soulful strut works well with Andrews' voice, especially on a blistering "Just You and Me," a born radio hit in the style of the Fabulous Thunderbirds. It's a voice that will only get better with age. MORE >>
John Moyer has taught at Natural Ear Music School off and on for the last eight years.
When he first coached at our summer camp, he was a member of the Austin band Soak.
He then joined Union Underground,
who he was with for several years before joining the major label group Disturbed. He is currently coaching three bands at the school
and is available for private lessons. Last year, we didnŐt list him as a coach because of his contractual restrictions; now we have been given permission to use his name and image.
We are pleased to claim him as one of our own.

Twenty-five years ago, Atherton would be working on a major label, her soft, soulful voice gaining fans by good-ol' word-of-mouth. Like Bonnie Raitt's best early albums, Atherton is comfortable singing country, blues, as well as country-blues. MORE >>
